Alert: Don’t Miss the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, also known as a Medicare private health plan or Medicare Part C, the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period gives you the chance to switch back to Original Medicare.

When deciding whether to make the change, keep in mind the following information:
  • The Disenrollment Period lasts from Jan. 1 to Feb. 14.
  • The change in your health plan will become effective the following month.
  • If you decide to switch to Original Medicare, you may not be able to buy a Medigap plan at that time. Medigap plans are supplemental insurance that help cover the co-pays and deductibles of Original Medicare. Whether you can purchase a Medigap plan when you switch depends on where you live. For more information, contact your state SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program).
  • You may switch to Original Medicare with or without a prescription drug plan, also known as Medicare Part D.
